Impact of resettlement on poor households under a railway project in Battambang, Cambodia: a gender-based analysis

AbstractThe resea rch assessed socio - economic effects of eviction affected households implemented by the railway rehabilitation project in Cambodia. The specific objectives of the research were to examine types and impact of gender of eviction received by the railway pr oject; to study the utilization of the compensation and living condition of the household for building at news resettlement site of livelihood utilities obtained from the railway project; to evaluate and assess their satisfaction and needs; to assess the c hanges in occupation, employment and income of the households and to provide recommendations on the improvement of the implementation of implementation program of the railway project for the affected households. The research was based on a survey approach applying primarily a qua l itative approach with the support of qua nt itative data. Other primary data collection methods were field observation, questionnaire survey, key informants interview and focus group discussion. Both quantitative and qualitative dat a analysis were applied in this research. Main findings showed that the eviction of people to relocate will impact gender of house rights and the status of income, occupation , employment, education, health, a nd environment of threatened community and the changing livelihood strategy. Women faced more obstacles beside house work she took much time to do extra job with low salary. The resettlement always affected to women and women is the main important to solve many problems. The lesson learnt from this re settlement project is that it is necessary to create an appropriate mechanism fo r gender impact and stakeholders to better understand the impact eviction and use it for evidence based promotion to policy and decision makers for better policies for eviction and relocation.
