AbstractThis study focuses on the comparison of the SCC's responses analyzed by 2D FEM and 3D FEM. Initially, the simulations of excavation problem, such as cut slope reinforced with SCCs, is performed with the variation of SCC's length, spacing and arrangement. The SCC's responses in term of horizontal displacement, bending moment and shear force are plotted for comparison between 2D and 3D analysis. The results show that 3D analysis gives the amounts of SCC's responses higher than those of 2D analysis. This is because stresses higher concentrate on 3D pile section than on 2D plane strain wall that stresses are averaged along longitudinal direction. Finally, the Suwanabhumi Canal case study where the SCCs are used to improve the stability of the slope, is simulated by both 2D and 3D FEM. Instumentation was performed in this project and the results are plotted and compared with the FEM results. Good agreement are found in the comparisons. The amounts and shape of horizontal displacement curves from both 2D and 3D FEM is in the vicinity of those from the monitoring data
