AbstractThis research focuses on the development of a hazard zonation and risk assessment for a 132 km² area in central Bakan province, Vietnam. This township is located in the Northeast mountainous region which has damaged by natural disasters, especially landslides. Most of landslides were shallow and identified as rotational landslides and debris slides. The existing landslides occurred in sandy siltstone along the road system, behind the houses having steep slopes. The fieldwork was carried out to identify characteristics of landslide and to analyze relationship of landslides and natural and human conditions. The fast development and urbanization of this area has increased the hazard and risk to landslides. For this purpose, the landslide index method was applied for landslide hazard mapping. The qualitative approach is used for landslide risk assessment based on the assumption on the amount of particular elements at risk. The collected field data were transferred to computer format by using ArcGIS 9.2 to create a landslide inventory map. Influencing factors are digitized as parameter maps and vulnerability factor maps of elements at risk. Finally, landslide hazard zonation was obtained using ArcGIS 9.2 to spatial analyze landslide inventory with natural parameters. Assessment of landslide risk is displayed as landslide risk zone after classifying of total risk map based on cost in unit of $/m². The total risk is carried out by multiplication of probability of landslide occurrence with vulnerability and amount of particular element at risk.
