AbstractA numerical study has been performed in order to establish the Hardening Soil model for the Bangkok subsoil. The model has been calibrated and validated for Bangkok subsoil by comparing the predicted diaphragm wall behavior with observed behavior in four proper monitored cases. The correlations of Hardening Soil model parameters with SPT 'N' values and undrained shear strength have been proposed in this study. Numerical and measured behavior of diaphragm wall was found very promising by using Hardening Soil model parameters derived from proposed correlations. The lateral wall movements predicted by Mohr Coulomb model are higher, whereas the bending moment profile is lower as compared to Hardening Soil model. The undrained effective stress analysis with effective strength parameters has been performed. Furthermore, Hardening Soil model predicts less wide settlement trough as compared to Mohr Coulomb model. Subsequently, a comparative study between Hardening Soil model and Beam-on-Spring model as specified in PLAXIS v. 8.5 and WALLAP v. 4 respectively has been performed in order to examine the more suitable model for the prediction of diaphragm wall behavior in Bangkok soil. Beam-on-Spring model predicts higher wall deflections and load effects as compared to that of Hardening Soil model
