AbstractThis study focused on summary of the observed behavior and performance of cut slope in soft clay stabilized with cement columns in the construction of Suvarnabhumi Flood Drain canal project. Several trial excavations were made in the early stage of the project, and the results were used to adjusted the initial design in term of addition of cement column, and change in the method and procedure. Characteristics and causes of failure of some of these trial sections were identified. The FEM analysis using PLAXIS 3D made to calculate the lateral displacement of the cut slope showed gave results that much over predicted the magnitude of the displacement of the trial sections where the analysis were made using input values of soil modulus determined from concern empirical relationship with undrained shear strength (E/C = 160 to 500). Adjusted a modulus for a better match of the displacement. The values are in the range of E/C = 200 to 950. FEM analyses were further made to determined effectiveness of reinforcement of cement with timber core. The maximum lateral displacement can be reduced by 30.40% (timber pile with 3/4L) and factor of safety against shear failure by using timber pile with 3/4L is increased from 1.69 to 2.20.
