Abstract | Embankments construct on soft ground cause settlement and/or sliding failure due to the loading, change in ground water head, etc. In order to avoid problem caused by instability of soft soil, the very important work is to determine the factor of safety of embankment during construction. It is very useful for practical engineering to have a stability control diagram during the staged construction of an embankment as Matsuo and Kawamura have proposed in 1977. As can be seen from the monitoring data at Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT) project and some other projects using PVD on thick soft ground, the value of qj/qf (qi is the loading at time i and qf is the loading at failure of an embankment) according to the measured values of settlement (S) and lateral displacement (h) obtained from Matsuo and Kawamura (1977)’s graph reaching or even exceeding the unity but no any problem with embankment stability. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the Matsuo and Kawamura (1977)’s graph for practical use in stability control during construction of staged embankments preloading on thick soft ground improved with PVD. This study is aimed to verify the applicability of using Matsuo and Kawamura (1977)’s graph for practical use in stability control during construction of embankment preloading on thick soft ground improved by PVD. In this thesis, stability analysis works are done by using SLOPE/W software and PLAXIS software. The deformation and factor of safety values of soft ground improved by PVD under embankment preloading by staged construction were determined. Results of analysis including deformation curves and factor of safety values were loaded on the graph of Matsuo and Kawamura (1977). Based on the distribution of factor of safety values on this graph, the criterion failure curves of Matsuo and Kawamura (1977)’s graph have been revised, and a new stability control diagram for staged construction of embankments on thick soft ground improved by PVD at a site in South of Vietnam is proposed. |
