AbstractThe performance of geotube breakwater constructed along the eroded Upper Gulf of Thailand was studied. The settlement records were compiled and analyzed for the geotube constructed on the eastern and weste rn side s of the Chao Phraya river mouth. In addition the subsoil condition s in the tidal zone along the coastline were investiga ted and compared with those in the inland area. The geotube placed on the soft soil without pile supports suffered drastic settl ement over 3 years period after construction. R ock topping of the geotube to raise back the crest in recent year s resul ted in settlement problem and difficulties in construction . 2D FEM analysis was performed t o back - analyz e soft clay parameter s and predic t the settlement of geotube breakwaters . The back analysis indicated that the actual settlements of the geotube were much larger than those theoretically predicted by the parameter values of laboratory test results. The actu al settlement of the geotbe seem ed to be affected by factor other than the compressibility of the soft subsoil as well.
