AbstractThis research is conducted in order to know the behavior and magnitude of ground movement due to shield tunne l ling and potential response of nearby building structures and on its found ations in the Chao Phraya area. The measured ground movements and building response from tunnelling was summarized. It was found that TBM face pressures, operation factors, presence of structures, canals have effect on ground movement due to tunnelling . The maximum surface settlement along the tunnel was 16 mm. While the settlement from surface settlement array varied from 5 mm to 21 mm. The Gaussian curve for surface settlement was found to be fitted in most of the cases. The width of settlement trough after passage of twin tunnel was observed between 8 m to 19 m. V olume loss after the passage of twin tunnel was observed between 0.2 % to 0.7%.High subsurface settlement was observed sometimes above the tunnel crown and sometimes at the surface. M aximum subsurface sett lement was 15.5 mm above the tunnel crown. While, maximum subsurface lateral movement was 58 mm observed near the su rface. The settlement of the building along the ground settlement trough was observed which varied from 0 to 14 mm. Then, three dimensional Plaxis modeling was performed to simulate the observed settlement. There was good agreement between the observed and predicted settlement with appropriate amount of tunnel contraction expressed in volume loss.
