Abstract | This study focused on base instability condition of two MRTA station constructions, namely Sanamchai and Itsaraphap Stations. Hydraulic uplift failure in Bangkok Subsoils seems to be problematic manner due to the rebound of groundwater. To control base instability, ground treatment by using Tube - A - Manchette grouting and jet grouting was applied for the whole area of BS12 Sanamchai Station to create a water - tight barrier. The pipe roof construction technique at Sanamchai Station was adopted due to space cons traint from government policy. Excavation sequence at Itsaraphap Station was modified later to prevent hydraulic uplift. Frictional resistant along compartment of soil box can help to resist water pressure underneath. The three - dimensional numerical simulations based on finite element analysis using PLAXIS 3D were performed to simulate the base instability condition of Itsaraphap Station. The factor of safety which calculated by weight balance equation shows the constant value of 0.96. In case of weight balance with soil shear strength equation, excavation strip width has an effect on safety factor. Another approach, phi - c reduction from PLAXIS, shows the same result trend as weight balance with soil shear strength equation. From the analysis of results, it can reveal that amount of heave is proportional with excavation strip width. It is found that maximum heave was 540 mm . Reasonable agreements between predicted lateral movements and observed field data were obtained |
