Abstract | This study involves assessment of geological condition and ground behavior encountered along the 670 m long Adit 6 of the Mae Ngad - Mae Kuang wate r diversion tunnel project in Chiang m ai. The tunnel was excavated by the conventional tunneling method with shotcrete, rock bolts and steel rib supports. The Adit is located in a thrust zone influenced by past tectonic events starting from collision betwe en Shan Thai block or Sinobuma block and Indochina block in Mesozoic era. The Adit alignment traverses a through branch of Mae Tha fault resulting in a complex geologically structured rock masses. It consists of numerous folds and faults in sedimentary ro cks comprising mostly Shales and Siltstone. Rock mass along most of the alignment is of poor condition which created a lot of problems during tunnel excavation. The problematic ground behavior is mainly in the form of rock fall, raveling and caving of hi ghly fractured thinly bedded shale. Two major collapses occurred in the course of the adit excavation which took more that eighteen months to complete. Delayed ground support installation was an important factor leading to tunneling difficulties and cons iderable overbreaks in this highly fractured rock mass. |
