Abstract | This study is on the review and assessment of tunnel lining design practice currently in used. The study consists of two parts. The first part is a comparative study of load conditions stipulated in various guidelines on lining of tunnels excavated by the conventional tunnelling method and by shield tunnelling. The second part is a comparison of the result and appropriateness of the two commonly used approaches in tunnel lining design analysis, i.e. thebeam-spring model and the continuum finite element model analysed by SAP2000 and PLAXIS 2D softwares, respectively. The parametric study demonstrates analysed cases into three cases, circular conventional tunnel, segmental tunnel lining and non-circular tunnel. Moreover, the horizontal load is varied by the values of coefficient of lateral pressure. The recommendations on load condition from numerous guidelines in each type of ground are slightly different. The comparative result between beam-spring model and finite element model has a significant effect on the displacement and stress resultants of the tunnel lining. The deformation of tunnel lining is represented to the stress components such as axial force and bending moment. |
