AbstractSRT Double Track Railway project (Chira Junction to Khon Kaen station) is one of the largest projects in Thailand. Construction manageme nt and engineering design are one of the key success factors. However, existing engineer ing data available in this area are very limited because the project is located in rural are a. Furthermore, the area originated from alluvial and aeolian deposition, resulting in uncer tainty in soil and rock layers. Piles were placed on either siltstone, sandstone, hard clay, o r very dense sand. Static load testing was performed on 16 tested piles to check the bearing c apacities of the piles. Strain gauges and extensometers were installed to the test piles to f ind out the axial force and pile shortening. The load testing was performed with an applied load up to 2.5 times the design working load. The test results shown that all of the piles did no t reach the failure criterion. The objective of this study is to propose an appropriate method f or design of piles in the study area. Pile settlement and load distribution were also studied to understand pile behavior on those rocks. Extrapolation methods were adopted to determine the design parameters under the fully mobilized loading conditions. The results of the ba ck-calculated parameters for pile design were compared to those proposed by others. The comp arison indicates that the results are consistent with those approaches.
