Abstract | Labour-based rural road constr uction was very popular and applied widely in the rural areas of Vietnam; it was unlike other developi ng countries where the local people tend to involve in the rural road projects as paid work, most of the rural women and men in Vietnam participated in this process under the forms of vol unteer labour days and cash contribution. This study focuses on gender analysis of labour-based rural road construction in Thuong Trung commune, in particular examining the extent of participation of women and men in rural road construction as well as socio-economic impacts on themselves and other community members due to their involve ment in road works. The study found that the participation in road construction activities has resulted in both benefits and detrimental influences on women and men; however, women had been burdened by more workload compared with men. Based on the findings of the study, recommendati ons have been provided aim to improve the benefit that women and men receive through rural road co nstruction activities. The collection of qualitative and quantitative data was conducted with 70 women and 70 men respondents through methods of interview, questionnaire survey, focus group discussion and observation at site. |
