AbstractCharacterized by the self-organization, self-configuration and self-healing abilities, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are viewed as promising wireless solution. Supported by frameworks provided by IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, benefits achieved by standardization and inherent strengths of WiMAX technology, IEEE 802.16 based wireless mesh networks are gaining momentum as backhaul networking solutions. An appropriate scheduling mechanism is one of the key factors for the success of such solution. The framework of election based transmission timing (EBTT) provided in the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard is the foundation for a scalable coordinated distributed scheduling as well as the exchange of network configuration information. This study reveals that there exist two fundamental flaws within the standard EBTT mechanism causing collisions and hindering the transmission opportunities of certain nodes. An emended election based transmission timing (EEBTT) mechanism, which does not require modifications of the signalling messages, formats or definitions, is proposed as a solution to overcome these flaws. This study proves the fairness of the proposed solution and investigates the performance of the EEBTT mechanism with varying network conditions
