AbstractIn telecommunication market today, understanding of network traffic and user behavior becomes the key issues for any telecom operator to achieve competitive advantages. This study employed charging database as a valuable resource for studying traffic parameters and phenomena as well as subscriber behavior. The observed charging data is of a PSTN network, recorded at the local tandem of Ha Long city, Quang Ninh, Vietnam. The tool chosen for organizing, and extracting information from charging data is SQL server 2000. Firstly, carried traffic for different periods have been re-constructed with the accuracy level of second which can not be achieved by traffic node measurement. The chosen resolutions for traffic profile varied from seconds to days. Traffic measurements were taken in busy hour, average daily peak hour, time-consistent busy hour etc. Secondly, different traffic phenomena have been examined. Holding time distribution was found not well fit with exponential model. This study confirms arrival and terminal processes of daily peak hour and time-consistent busy hour are Poisson. Cumulated processes of time-consistent busy hours and daily peak hours also were found as Poisson. Occupation distribution was examined similarly but it is not Poisson. These phenomena were accurately observed since all arriving and terminating calls in every second were recorded. Lastly, different aspects of subscriber behaviour over the population can be discovered. Number of active days of subscriber in one month was found having an increasing distribution. Relation between number of incoming and out going calls of subscriber has the trend line quite near 45 degrees at the first part. Distributions of number of calls and receivers per subscriber were also examined. Relation between number of receivers and number of out going calls per subscriber was found linear at the initial. Distribution of average holding time was found very identical to log-normal. This study also observed the matrices which provide the overall view of the traffic flows of Ha Long city. Different mobile operators were compared regarding traffic with Ha Long city fixed network. The confidence of subscriber information was also considered so that no private number can be revealed. This can be done by encoding subscriber numbers using SQL.
