AbstractSince the introduction of rapid prototyping (RP) concept in the early 1980, RP has become an important technology that help manufacturer reduce their product development time. Intensive research has been conducted at both technology providers and research institutions. While some groups have been working on enhancing RP methodology, others have been focusing on improving the existing RP techniques or developing new RP techniques. Presented in this research was a design and development of the material handling unit of a new sheet-based RP technique. Due to the functional requirement of a prototype made to contain liquid material (e.g., vase, jar, etc.); this material handling system supports both internal and external contour cuts on each layer. Preliminary study was conducted to select a material type, a sheet-like as well a suitable sheet binding method. Then the prototypes were fabricated manually to examine water leaking. Afterward, the material handling unit was designed and constructed. It includes four sub-stations: sheet storage, platform 1, excess remover and platform 2. Foreseen problems at each station were addressed at the early stage of the design and were used in the design to prevent undesired conditions. The four sub-stations were built and after testing each unit separately, they were then integrated to form a prototype of the material handling unit. Finally its performance was evaluated in manual mode
