AbstractWith their unique properties, lasers have been widely used in rapid prototyping process to sinter, solidify or cut material in order to form a part layer by layer. However, their high costs have motivated researchers and developers to seek for other less expensive technologies as an alternative. Waterjet is one of the candidates, and the feasibility of applying it in RP has been investigated in this research. Regarding its property, the research has been focused on applying it as a cutting tool in sheet-based RP process. Three main issues which are material selection, cutting condition and prototyping technique were addressed in two phases. Preliminary study was conducted to identify type of material and the results showed that natural rubber sheet offers better cut quality than other candidates. In the second phase, design of experiment was applied to determine the relationship between cut surface quality and cutting condition. The appropriate condition was then used to construct a prototype. In this study, a proposed Waterjet-Based RP technique was similar to JP-5 concept. A rubber sheet was cut by waterjet and obtained layers were manually stacked up onto the previous one. Liquid latex was applied in between layers to bind them together. It can be concluded from the study that waterjet can be employed in RP process. However, the technique may be limited to JP-5 until the escape of jet after cutting will be solved.
