AbstractFor the surveillance application, there are many solutions to fulfill the monitoring requirements. One of the most powerful choices is the digital signal system with the built-in web server camera, called the network camera. This network camera can be accessed from anywhere at anytime to monitor and control the camera via internet. However, there are some restrictions in its classification capability and communication beyond the internet area due to the camera's limitations on its resources. As to improve the system and solve the stated problem, the application of the auxiliary component in the local and mobile phone to the system of interest is the main emphasis of this research. In the local site, the network camera is only able to take the snapshots and record video, therefore the auxiliary local server has to do the classification work by using the program in MATLAB to check whether there is any change in frame or if there is human in the frame. Another critical limitation of the investigated system is that user can access the network camera only in the area where the internet is available. To increase the accessibility and, thus, the controllability of the surveillance system, the author picked the particular mobile phone, a Symbian series 60, and integrated that smart phone as to monitor and control the camera is proposed from remote site. Moreover, an Apache - PHP web server is build up to do intermediary works between mobile client and local server by using the developed programming code together with its image database. Furthermore, this developed application for the monitoring tasks is capable of sending an automatic alarm by short message (SMS) to inform the user when the network camera with the classification program could identify that the trespasser is the human being. In summary, the integrating mobile phone system and local server with the network camera system could make the surveillance application not only more effective, but also more useful than ever.
