Abstract | Suspension is one of the important components in a hard disk drive that requires advanced and complex technology. Processing of this component may result in production inefficiency. An example of this inefficiency can be seen during the assembling process wherein, the subparts of a suspension are joined together with the use of laser welding machine. From this process, the quality of welded parts is checked using different welding evaluation techniques. The most widely utilized evaluation technique at present is a visual testing by human vision. Although human vision is flexible and adaptable, the use of it in checking product quality is still subjective and time-consuming. Additionally, the individual’s acceptable criteria in judging product quality may vary according to his own experiences and skills. This limitation had prompted the authors to present an approach that will reduce the inefficiency of weld spots inspection. With this objective, the authors developed an automated inspection system that can determine the quality of micro weld spots on a suspension. The developed system utilized the multi-target template matching technique in detecting the number of weld spots on a suspension. After detection, the characteristic features of the weld spots are then extracted and are further classified using AND logic method. The study revealed that the processing speed of this automated inspection system can reach up to 25 milliseconds per weld spot at an inspection accuracy of 98.67 %. |
