AbstractThe objective of this thesis is to develop an autom ated vision inspection system for a gear box assembly line to eliminate the defects caused i n the assembly process. The necessity of implementing this system is because of the critical usage of the product. The assembled gear motor is used to drive an endoscopic tissue cu tter for the operations in human body. The development of the system has two phases, first to design and estimate possible system architectures while finalizing the productio n line flow layout and deploying the inspection system in correct places of the producti on line. Possible software configurations and inspection algorithms are also designed in this stage. In second phase a lab prototype is developed to test the inspection algorithms. A heig ht adjusting fixture with a stepper motor as a driving mechanism is developed. A PIC micro co ntroller was used to control the motor and to interface with the software program. In insp ection software program a video stream is captured from the camera and desired image frame is taken for inspection algorithm work. The image is converted in to RGB color model and color segmentation used to detect the components. Detected color blobs were ch ecked for the Hu’s moment invariant parameters to detect the correct components. For ch ecking correct fixing a Hough circle detection algorithm was used. To detect the presenc e of grease a color pixel count of the grease is used.
