AbstractThis paper proposes automatic parking and path planning algorithms which are capable to find a parking lot by itself and autonomously ma neuver an intelligent ve hicle to park at a parking lot without collision by using digital compass, laser range finder and encoder sensors. In this thesis, the automatic parking system was developed on an electrical golf car which was modified for autonomous navigati on and control purpose. Three important features of an automatic parking system are surrounding mapping to find a parking lot, path planning and path tracking to park at the destination without any collision. To map surrounding, the laser range finder was used to de tect beside obstacles and the parking lot, the encoder provided the odometrical informati on of the vehicle movement and the digital compass was used to measure the orientat ion of the vehicle. The surrounding mapping algorithm used rotation of axes which is anal ytic geometry. The path planning algorithm composes of a set of circle and line segments where the circles correspond to the minimum turning radius of the vehicle. To contro l the vehicle tracks th e planned path, the proportional control algorithm was used. The experimental result s show efficient performance of the automatic parkin g system by using the proposed method.
