AbstractThe main motive for the need of development comes from stringent requirements of consumer on the capacity per drive which needs to be increased at least twofold every 2 years; for this reason, data track size has to be shrunken to increase track density. Nonetheless, extremely high resolution movement of the reader and writer across the written data track is needed to prevent off-track error and improve position error signal (PES) for high capacity product in future. Well-known solution is using secondary stage actuator to achieve high resolution of displacement, which it could not obtain from primary stage actuator. Nowadays, we are using voice coil motor (VCM) as primary actuator and there are several configurations for secondary actuator or micro-actuator (MA) which have three types of micro-actuator which are Piezoelectric, Electro-Magnetic and Electro-Static along with three types of moving object Load beam, Slider and Read/Write Element. Since the design of PZT actuator must be selected only one design for high volume manufacturing, the objective of this thesis is to understand the PZT’s behavior of each design in short term and long term with suspension-based milli-actuator. The experiment result from this thesis will be useful information for HDD industrial to support decision making on the design selection based on engineering data prior to implement it. Besides, it is expected that the knowledge from this study can use for design optimization of PZT actuator in next generation of dual stage actuator which is slider-based milli-actuator in the near future.
