AbstractA computer mouse is one of the most popular computers pointing device facilitating computer users in operating software. However, intensive use of mouse could lead to repetitive strain injuries in musculoskeletal systems of hands and fingers. In this paper, the biomechanical model was developed to analyze the dynamics of index finger during mouse click based on different mouse activating forces and levels, and finger postures. From the biomechanical, it was found that the fingertip force-time relationship of mouse click was similar to the case of keyswitch; except for the model click time was considerably lower than that of the average click time as claimed in the literatures. The model showed that the mouse with the lowest activating force and level close to the end of switch travelling distance was the most ergonomic type in term of force and energy production. However, the best finger postures for mouse click could not be clearly judged by the model results. The optimization algorithm and real experiment were suggested to be developed to seek the optimal finger postures relative to the mouse sizes and validate the biomechanical model.
