AbstractAreal density of hard disk drive is being increased twice every two years. In order to read and write data on such a high density track, the good data track following performance of reader and writer hard disk drive head must be achieved. Good data track following performance requires high servo bandwidth. Servo bandwidth can be increased by adjusting controller. But increasing of servo bandwidth is limited by resonance of mechanical component in hard disk drive. In this paper, the resonance compensator techniques are discussed. Notch filter is chosen as the suitable technique which can handle the big variation of resonance mode. There are also multiple resonance modes presented in hard disk drives which make the conventional optimization method quite difficult. Particle swarm optimization is introduced to find the optimal notch filter and controller’s parameters. The optimization is processed by considering the error rejection function or sensitivity function. Difference between targeted and actual error rejection is used as the cost function for our optimization. Finally the optimized parameters are tested with the real hard disk drive and then position error signal is measured. The target error rejection is designed to minimum the position error signal (PES). With optimized controller and compensator, the error rejection is closer to the target thus the position error signal is reduced.
