AbstractRecently, structure light system-based selective da ta acquisition has been introduced as an alternative to traditional reverse engineering a pproaches that normally acquire point cloud from entire object surface and perform data r eduction prior to model reconstruction. This selective data acquisition, on the other hand, analyzes the complexity of the object surface before acquiring s urface data. Each recommendation is made according to relative deviations of projected bright lines representing the segments of the top and bottom contours of a consid ering layer. Presented in this research is an attempt to simplif y and to improve the performance of the acquisition part of SLS-based selective data ac quisition. Rather than applying structured light system to make recommendations to an acquisition device where to obtain contours, the research aims to generate cont ours directly from the sets of projected bright line images. A contour can be form ed by assembly segments obtained from the images of projected line when they have en ough accuracy, and are placed properly. In order to put the contour segments in t he proper locations and orientations, a reference point is applied explicitly in this resea rch as a common point for contour assembly. Therefore, aligning the reference point t o their proper positions will result in proper placement of the segments to form the contou r. The research has been conducted in two stages: investigating contour creation conce pt and developing an algorithm. In the first stage, the concept of contour creation wa s investigated under ideal projected bright line and SLS projection. The result indicate d that factors, including autofocus, image resolution and reference point, affect the a ccuracy of the constructed contour. The condition to achieve a high accurate construct ed contour has been identified. The results from stage one were used for developing SLS -based contour creation algorithm. This new selective data acquisition approach has be en implemented successfully and tested with various samples.
