AbstractToday, in the modern era, most of the mosaic tile products are fabricated for opus regulatum onto a medium base. This tiling proce ss is manually done in facto ries by according to the desig ned pattern. In this research, an automatic tiling s ystem has been developed for custom mosaic design. The system consists of three main activ ities: mosaic rendering, tile color matching, and mosaic tile assembly . For the mosaic rendering activity , a digital image is converted to be a mosaic -like image that covers entire decoration area. Pixels in the mosaic image will be represented by square s olid color tiles on the decorative area. For the color matching activity , it compares and matches the color codes of mosaic image with the available tile colors in the stock. The color matching activity is determin ed from CIE L*a*b* color values . For the a utomatic tile assembly activity, the tile image information is received from the tile pattern preparation process. A n approach for managing tiles to the concept of automatic tiling system in production flow system is proposed which is consisted of two proc esses : tile sorting and tile assembly. The shortest distance criterion is applied to the sorting step. A software package was implemented on LabVIEW program and also data acquisition board that is used to control the machine and manipulate all other actuat ors. The developed tiling system was tested for performance successfully.
