AbstractThe Hard Disk Drive (HDD) industry is a ra pidly growing industry. The demand for hard disk drives is rapidly incr easing day by day and to m eet this growing demand the manufacturers of hard disk dr ives are moving towards full automation of their assembly lines across the world to ramp up production. A critical component of the HDDs is a Head Gimbal Assembly or an HGA. The HGA has its own pr ocess of assembly. The HGA production is done on high precision and highly accurate pa llets. The high accuracy and precision is required for the complex processes done in pr oduction of an HGA. The final stage of HGA production is the Unloading process. The Unload machine picks and places multiple HGAs from pallets to Aqueous cleaning trays. For this the pick and place end effector has to re- pitch to a different pitch distance between th e multiple HGAs as the pitch distance between the HGAs on the pallets and on the aqueous clea ning trays is different . The problem with this type of end effector in automation is th at if the design of the AQ tray changes the complete end effector needs to be remade as per the new requirements. The production line has to be stopped as the Unload machine needs to be reconfigured for diffe rent a tray type which is highly undesirable. The aim of this study is to develop a new design concept based on parallel linkage structure for the end effector so that it has the flexibility to deal with changing tray types and which can be configur ed online without shut ting down the machine, using just the software interface.
