AbstractThailand forest resources have been declining rapidly since almost five decades ago and continued even after the logging ban in 1989. Decentralization and increased request by rural people to manage their forest resources saw a strong increase of CBFM projects that currently total more than 5.000 in the whole Thailand peninsula. This study explored the management activities and use of 10 community forests in two different provinces in Western Thailand. Besides also some biophysical conditions were investigated in order to assess forest resources. It was found that success of community forest management depends on various factors intern to the community plus outside factors related to inputs given by external institutions. Several of the community forests investigated was found to be weak in their management activities and this reflected on forest resources conditions. It was found that there was an improvement of forest resources conditions between the period antecedent the implementation of management activities and after, however it could not be proved if amelioration were due totally to human intervention or by natural means. Wild and arson fire were found to be the main causes for forest degradation, together with low impact of management and amelioration activities.
