AbstractThe two and half decades of civil strife followed by severe drought from 1999-2002, is resulting devastating situation on rural livelihood through decline in agriculture and livestock productivity, the main stay of around 80% of population in Afghanistan. This study presents an evaluation of decline in agriculture land, reduction in agriculture productivity due to water resources degradation. Accordingly the impact of decline in agriculture land and productivity on essential components of rural livelihoods reliant on agriculture, such as employment, sources income, food, and fuel for cooking and heating, during the past ten years from 1999-2008, in Deh Sabz district, Kabul province. The evaluation is based on results obtained by the analysis of primary data generated through a structured questionnaire by households' surveys in field. The study concludes that land area of cereal, fruit and vegetable crops has been gradually declined by 42, 31 and 78 percent respectively whereas, the decrease in agriculture productivity have been followed by 66, 64, 77 and 83 percent in wheat, fruit, vegetable and dairy products correspondingly. Consequently 36 percent lost of employment, losses and diversification in sources of income and fuel as well as food deficits have been experienced by rural people.
