AbstractShrimp culture can provide income to shrimp farmers and national economy but it also can create pollution if farm management is not good enough. Voluntary environmental management is an option for developing farm management. The objectives of this study which was conducted in coastal Samut Sakhon province, Thailand emphasized on identifying the factors that affect the attitude of shrimp farmers on voluntary environmental management. The Code of Conduct (CoC) and ISO 14001: 2004 Environmental Management System (EMS), they were used as a proxy of voluntary environmental management. From studying 85 shrimp farmers, attitude of shrimp farmers on voluntary environmental management was in general negative. It meant they were not familiar with it and did not like and want to practice it on their farms. The factors which affected the attitude were farm practice factors which consisted of shrimp species, net income of farm, farm certification and farm problem, and knowledge and perception factors which were included education level, understanding of voluntary environmental management and awareness of natural resource and environment. It could be concluded that the attitude would be increased when farm practice, and knowledge and perception factors were developed. Policy recommendations for improving their attitude include providing knowledge, technical and financial supports to shrimp farmers, and incentives for shrimp farmers who practice voluntary environmental management on their farm.
