AbstractFisheries co - management in Tanzania is implemented through Beach Management Units and it was introduced in coastal communities as an effort to manage fisheries resource. Th e study was conducted in fishing communities at Mafia Island, Tanzania mainly covers four villages; Kilindoni, Dongo Ndagoni and Chung uruma Villages with the aim of assess the effectiveness of the established Beach Management Units (BMUs) in Managing Fisheries Resources and Improving Livelihood of the Poor Resource Users within the coastal c ommunities, This research based on qualitati vely approach whereby Questionnaire survey were carried out on the households mainly dealing with fishing activities, whereby 120 household Questionnaire survey were conducted in 4 villages each 30 household. Due to absence of data in BMU office, respondents were asked to remember and to com pare amount of fish , they used to catch in five years before and after introduction of BMU in their village. Data were managed and analyzed by the use of SPSS, Min tab software and EXCEL, in comparing among different variable the following test was conducted; Chie square test, Kruskal Wallis test, Mann - whitey test, also weighting average index (WAI) was used to analyze level of fishers satisfaction in various aspects, in accessing the influence of various parameters both Ordinal Logistic Regressions (OLR) and Binary Logistic Regressions (BLR) was also conducted. Overall results indicate that, Level of fishers satisfactions in Fish catch, BMU operations and Households food security is generally Satisfactory, regarding to fish catch status there is a slight increase ov er the study area, for the case of Participations and Perceptions in BMU operations still low while illegal gears and events are decreasing in all Villages to date, for Strengthening BMU operations both BMU and Government should solicit fund which will b e used to support operations , Gear exchange program and capacity building, for the case of increasing fish catch , areas of importance breading sites should be identified for protection and for better economic gain, Both Government and NGOs, should sol icit funds , in order to support alternatives economic activities to accommodate those fisher who loss there gears during patrols, also there should be a village based Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOS) for reliable economic gain.
