Abstract | In recent years, climate change has become a big problem in developing countries all over
the world, especially in Vietnam. The study about the impacts of climate change on farmer’s
livelihood is not conducted at local scale in Vietnam. This study analyses the impacts of
climate change on agricultural livelihoods in Nui Thanh district -a coastal district of central
Vietnam where so many natural disasters hit annually. This study persued to seek following
queries including the trends in climatic factors, their effects on agriculture livelihood of
local farmers, impacts on agriculture productivity as perceived by the farmers on their
livelihood, and their adaptive measures to climate change. First, this study found out the
trends in increase of some climate factors such as average annual temperature, maximum
averagee temperature, total of annual rainfall and so on but the changes are not much. These
changes have affected significantly on agriculture livelihood of local farmers. With other
factors, these changes contribute to reduce productivity and quality of agriculture products.
The farmers have perceived about local climate change and impacts of changes to their
livelihood in part closely to analysis from secondary data. Thus, with direction of local
government, they applied some measures to adapt to climate change and at first perception
expected outcome. However, due to climate are more unstable in some recent years, income
from agriculture is low and the households that with agriculture is main livelihood are
usually poor. In order to reduce uncertainties from climate change, some activities are
suggested by authority, such as water storage and augmentation, mangrove forest plantation,
developing adaptive suitable varieties, agriculture practice and regular training should be
carried out. |
