AbstractThe southern part of Ayeyarwaddy delta has been experiencing soil salinity problemsin cultivated lands due to the sea water intrusion and seasonal tidal. A large number of cultivated lands were flooded with sea water during cyclone Nargis (2008). Rice production was severely affected by salinization after two years Nargis. This study effort to explore the impacts of soil salinity on rice production, the awareness of farmers on soil salinity and assessing the adoption of coping strategies by the farmers to reduce salinity problems after cyclone. The survey was conducted in November 2011 after three years cyclone Nargis. In the two study areas, one is salt water intrusion area and the rest one is salt and fresh water area, using total of 101 respondents. Descriptive statistics, frequency, average, crosstabs, chi-square test, paired-samples T-test were used as analytical tools. The main finding showed that the average yield of rice is still low with the higher use of fertilizers than before and more compaction of cultivated lands is found. The major problem is spikelet sterility in rice production due to the sea water intrusion when the harvesting time. The farmers in area 1 are still lack of awareness on soil salinity. It can also be concluded that Area 2 is less salinity impacts than Area 1 because of the awareness of farmers on soil salinity, their farming practices and the availability of fresh water for irrigated crops.
