AbstractThe Manganese mining activity has been starting in Eastern Shan state, Myanmar produced a number of positive economic and social impacts including increased market opportunities and development of infrastructure. As China is a huge market demand for Manganese, that has made more mining pits, expansion of mining territory and developing the infrastructure for services to support that mining industry. However, positive economic impacts on the region of autonomous administration in Eastern Shan state, the negative impacts were found in the communities where mostly closed to the mining pit area in term of their livelihood patterns. The concerns are that local communities may be more facing more difficulties in conducting their agriculture and livestock as recent years because of damage of agricultural lands, water pollution and water scarcity and animal numbers have reduced gradually. Moreover they have concern of shouldering many of the costs of relocating process for new settlements due to expansion of mining area. Lessons from these natural resource extraction activities suggest that greater attention needs to be paid to recovery of the affected lands, alternative livelihoods opportunities, information flow, integrating with local community in expanding or existing mining activity and empowerment of local community.
