AbstractThe study intends to analyze impact of REDD+ in forest socio - ecological systems (SES) under diverse implementation mechanisms through detecting changes in forest conditions, user‘s socio - economic status, quality of gove rnance and finally analyzing interactions among them. The study was conducted in REDD+ pilot project sites of 20 Community Forest Users Groups in 8 districts of Nepal using both quantitative and qualitative information collected through household survey, f ocus group discussions and expert‘s interview. Since, Nepal is still in pilot phase the learning from this study would aid in the Nepal‘s national REDD initiative. The study found that there were positive changes in forest density and biodiversity while r educed incidences of forest fire and deforestation. The result is assumed to be a combined effect of community forestry initiative and REDD+ interventions. User‘s dependency towards forest products were not changed while inputs given by service providers f ailed to acknowledge tradition and culture involved. There are significant forest transparent policies in Nepal but these policies are not clear and duplicating. With new technologies being introduced, role of external service providers have significantly increased with reduced user‘s autonomy; SES may crash after the service providers depart away. A REDD+ methodology with good practices and autonomy that compliments current practices of Community Forestry is the best suited REDD+ methodology for Nepal.
