AbstractCommunity forestry (CF) is a forest management system practicing around the world. According to its concept community forestry encourageslocal communities to raise forests themselves under their own management scheme with a twin goal of restoring degraded forests and reducing rural poverty. Myanmar started practicing community forestry in1995. Myanmar has now 19 years of experience in CF and there are so many things to learn from that experience. This study was conducted to assess the impact of CF on the livelihood of local people. The assessment was designed to compare the livelihood conditions of FUG and non-FUG households within two village communities in the Ayeyarwady delta. In the field survey, 100 households comprising 50 households each from FUG and non-FUG in two villages in Pyarpon District of Ayeyarwady delta were randomly selected and interviewed with structured questionnaire survey. Key informant interviews, focus group discussions were also conducted to get qualitative data. The analysesweredone to knowthe comparative livelihood conditions of FUG and non-FUG households, factors affecting the livelihood of FUG and non-FUG households and livelihood strategies developed by FUG and non-FUG households. The results show that FUG members have better livelihood than non-FUG households and the factor affecting livelihood of people in the study are closely related to their accessibility to social and financial assets. In addition, livelihood strategies of people vary according tothe availabilityand accessibility of livelihood assets and landless households from non-FUG got limited options of livelihood strategies. One of the recommendations of the study is to improveparticipation of non-FUG members in CF activitiesin order to promote inclusivenessand thus reduce the conflicts and enhance sustainability.
