AbstractIn Myanmar, rural out migration within the countries and abroad has been common over the past decades. In dry zone of Myanmar, agriculture is the main sector that supports people’s livelihood with income, food and employment. However, constraints in agriculture such as unfavorable weather conditions, high input cost and low production, have led farmers from dry zone to increasingly utilize migration as a livelihood strategy. As a result of agricultural labor shortage due to migration, it has impacted on children left behind in terms of their farm labor contribution and an increased burden in domestic and agricultural work. Although the relationship between remittances and schooling or relationship between parental migration and children’s educational performance have been given much attention in research, there has been less focus on effects of household members’ migration on child labor. Previous studies on child labor have demonstrated that among the possible external and internal causes of child labor, migration has been accepted as one of the main influencing factors for child labor. Therefore, this study examines whether or not household members’ migration provides additional domestic and farm work for the children left behind.
