AbstractLand use change has been defined as the actions that people undertake on land to change or to maintain it. Land use change and its impact on rural livelihood in Mt. Popa area was conducted to explore the effects of industrialization and land modification by the rural households. The research found that the percentage of land use type forest area, water bodies was significantly decreased, but, the agricultural land area was increased from 2008 to 2014. Land use change achieved by using Landsat ETM images. Both positive and negative effects of changes were found on the local people. Industrialization created the job opportunities to the local people and increase accessibility and physical assets, but, the natural asset and financial asset of local people was found significantly decreased. Agroforestry practice was found to increase the social asset and natural asset. There were several challenges to improve the local people livelihood including lack of adequate capital, weak of supports such as training, inadequate technical support. The land use policy should consider local people indigenous right and their tradition to balance the development action of government.
