AbstractIn this study, the targeted objectives are to find out the main actors and map out the live and beef cattle value chain, to identify problems and constraints of that value chain and to drive recommendation for the development of the cattle production through value chain approach. This research uses both quantitative and qualitative assessments to know the live cattle and beef cattle value chain, and a total number of 78 respondents were interviewed. In this study, specifically three categories of actors were identified, which are agro pastoralists, cattle traders and operators of butcheries and retailers. In the study area, livestock market structure was made up of three tier system where marketing takes place at farm level, the regional market and in the terminal market. From terminal markets and slaughterhouses, meat reaches consumers via various routes. In the study, when profitability of all actors was calculated based on gross margin per one cattle, it was observed that, the producers receive the largest share for a period of 4 years, followed by the processor and retailor, and the trader/ broker earned the least. However, the traders would an average transport their trading stock with 10 head per month and sell at the terminal market, and also, the processors and retailers would an average processing of 27 heads per month at the terminal market. This study showed that cattle production system is very poorly productive in the study area, and the producers undertake livestock keeping not as commercial enterprise. Finally, some constraints such as low price, lack of capital to invest cattle raising, access to credit, poor veterinary care, poor breeds, feed shortage, no accessible to credit and training, lack of institutional support faced by the producers were observed and then some recommendations were made.
