Abstract | Mangrove forestsfulfillseveral benefitsfor environment and people livelihood. However, they have been lost. Such loss has important implications for long-term conservation of mangrove forests. The study will analyzethe change of mangrove forest area; analyze the role of mangrove conservation for livelihood activities; access people perception onmangrove conservation, and propose the appropriate guideline for conservation. The study was based on questionnaire design, key informant interview, and focus group discussion. In Trapeang Sengke Community, mangrove forests decreasedby cutting of mangroves, low sustainability action in protecting the mangrove forest, low household incomes, illegal fishing activities and decreasing fishery resources. The study found out that fishing and farming are their important occupations. There is high awareness and participation among the local people. The successful of mangrove conservation the community involved several components, the community tried to find the cooperation with NGOs, local authority, and fishery department and environmental department to have financial, technical and legal support. High community commitment and participation make conservation even more successful. There are several specific conservation activitiesincluding: Nursery, Replanting, Protecting, Patrolling, and Regulation and Prohibition. The outcomes of conservation: increasing mangrove forest area, fishery resources, better income generation from fishing, and alternative income from eco-tourism. |
