Abstract | This research analyzed the agricultural extension activities provided by agrochemical companies among Mung Bean grower in Pwintbyu Township of Magway Region of Myanmar. The main objective of the research was to assess the effectiveness of private sector in agri cultural extension among the Mung Bean growers. The specific o bjectives were to study the types of agricultural extension methods and approaches provided by private sector, and to assess the effectiveness of private sector in providing extension services t o Mung Bean growers. The research was conducted with three types of farmers which are small, medium and large farmers in two villages using a survey questionnaire as a main tool with a total of 120 sample respondents. The research was focused on quantitative analysis with the support of qualitative analysis . Main finding of this research is that the extension approach today in the study area which is used by agrochemical companies is training and visit approach. There w ere three main agricultural extension activities delivered by agrochemical companies. It includes individual methods which are field visit, shop visit and telephone, group contact method such as group meeting and mass contact method like radio, TV and leaf lets. The result of this study describes that shop visits, group meeting and leaf lets methods were most effective way to disseminate agricultural information among farmers. This study describes that the agricultural extension activities were satisfied by t he farmers. Most of the farmers got agricultural information from agrochemical companies through shop visit, group meeting and leaflets methods after that farmer’s groups changed insecticide, compound fertilizer and foliar fertilizer amount after receiving technologies than the amount before receiving technologies. And then Farmer’s groups changed their crop yield after receiving technologies than the crop yield before receiving technologies. Thus, providing extension services of agrochemical companies is e ffective for Mung Bean growers. Farmers received the specific agricultural extension activities, but the receiving in field visit was weak in the receiving of the farmers and a lot of farmers want to get this extension activity . Therefore, the extension agents should increase their efforts to perform in field visit extension activities . The study shows that using mass media such as radio and TV methods are still weak. Therefore, government should further promote with fair price to use mass media by the pr ivate sector to disseminate agricultural technologies not for advertising of product information. Although farmers received specific aspects of technological information, greater percentage has in some aspects and still frail have in some aspects in each f arming practices. The weak receiving knowledge aspects among farming practices and specific supporting programs for all farmers should be explored and provided by extension staffs. |
