Abstract | Highly deviated well is becoming common practice in Oil and Gas industry, this well path has challenges related to many aspects of the well construction processes. To drill highly deviated well also come problems with high drilling torque and unreachable target. Thus, torque and drag reduction is needed to apply for highly deviated drilling. This study aims to address causes and effects of torque and drag for highly deviated wells in the Gulf of Thailand and propose possible solutions to reduce torque and drag. The first step of this study is to simulate torque and drag by using the actual data from the highly deviated wells that have been drilled. This process gives a detail in limitation of drill string and aware the weak point in drill string along hole depth. The friction factor calibration is to obtain the important value. This value is useful for a new similar well planning, because well planner can use this value to make more accurate well path and avoid exceeding drill string limitation. The possible solutions in Study’s wells are to analyze three factors. First, adding mud lubricant is costly and effectively method, this method gives approximate 7.0% torque reduction and 10% drilling fluid cost increased. Second, build-up rate reduction gives 7% torque reduction when 0.5°/30 m build-up rate is reduced. Last, weight on bit reduction gives 5% torque when 50% weight on bit is reduced. |
