Abstract | Reductive and oxidative bleaching of Deinked Pulp (DIP) has been studied to find the RCF (Recycled fiber) potential in Supercalendered (SC-A) paper furnish. DIP from Norske Skog Singburi Mill was bleached with eight different two-stage and multi-stage bleaching sequences. Combinations of oxidative and reductive bleaching agents were applied to meet brightness target for SC-A paper. High residual ink content in mill DIP was the main obstacle that reduced brightness increase to moderate level. Thus, re-flotation was conducted in laboratory to remove residual ink as much as possible. Bleaching result for re-floated DIP was finally 65 % ISO brightness. Potential negative effects on yield losses and environment were studied as well. As an average, each two-stage and multi-stage bleaching sequence caused 2.5 % loss in the yield. Maximum loss was 5 %. Total Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) load in waste water discharged from each sequence was less than 23 kg O₂/ton pulp. Thermo Mechanical Pulp (TMP) was used as reference pulp in handsheet making. Handsheets made from 60 % re-floated bleached DIP, 15 % refined SW Kraft and 25 % filler had better optical properties, and statistically better tear resistance and bending stiffness than TMP reference pulp. Formation and smoothness were identical. However tensile strength and gloss were lower compared to reference. |
