AbstractThis study was conducted in laboratory scale to determine what kind of effect pin chip cooking conditions have on kraft pulp properties. Pin chips are one optional raw material for pulp chemical production. Some manufacturers use pin chips because amount of pin chips becomes larger day by day as a pulp mill and wood industry side product. Kraft pulping base on pin chips have practical drawbacks, such as higher alkali charge, lower kappa number, higher alkali residual, and lower yield but it will give added value when mixed with standard chip kraft pulp. Pin chips used in the experiments consisted of following fraction: 60% pin, 35% accept chip and 5% fine (sawdust). Unbleached pin chip pulp and standard unbleached pulp were mixed on a ratio 20:80 before oxygen delignification stage to see the effect of pin chips into final pulp properties. Bleaching after oxygen delignification was done with DHT-EOP-D1 sequence. Kappa factor 0.25 at DHT stage was chosen to reach final brightness level close to 90 % ISO. Beating mostly affects physical properties of paper of pin chip mixture pulp. At tensile index 45 Nm/g, the highest tear index was 6.4m.Nm2/g; it was marginal compared than Pre O2 stage mill sample 6.7m.Nm2/g. This observation is obviously due to higher fines content in pin chips cooking which tend to change fiber morphology of mixed pulp.
