The role of sulphuric acid addition on hot chlorine dioxide bleaching of unbleached acacia kraft pulp

AbstractOxygen Delignified Acacia Mangium- Acacia Crassicarpa (70:30 % composition) Kraft pulp from Riaupulp-Indonesia was used as raw materi al in the laboratory bleaching, D HT - EP-D 1 sequence, experiments. The roles of inserted H 2 SO 4 to D HT stage were studied by using D 0 stage as control and D HT stage as treated. The 1 % of H 2 SO 4 inclusion was lead to both D 0 and D HT stage in each level tested condition, the equal se ries treatment for comparison purposed were not added or 0 % H 2 SO 4 as well. When elevated the temperature, bleached yield shrin kage, TOC to effluent, and viscosity were found negative effect. The zero span and tensi le strength of the both unrefined and refined pulp were unaffected by acid treatments. Th e amount of chlorine dioxide required to reach 89 % ISO brightness was lowered as much as 20 %, due to the major kappa contributor both Hexenuronic acid and Lignin were removed by inserted H 2 SO 4 to D HT stage . In application, the bleaching plant of pulp mill that not have hot Acid (A) stage prior to bleaching plant, savings in bleach chemicals still can be realized when D HT stage inserts Sulphuric Acid to control pH, to remove Hexenuronic acid, and to reduce EP stage kappa number.
