Abstract | The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Poly( ε -caprolactone) and Soy Protein Isolate coating on the mechanical and water resistant properties of coated papers. The paper properties were determined depending on the contents of SPI. Water resistant papers were prepared by coating paper with Poly( ε -caprolactone) (PCL) blend with Soy Protein Isolate (SPI) that was denatured by Glycerol (GLY). Coconut oil (CNO) was used as a compatibilizer for two components. Swelled SPI in GLY was prepared at ambient temperature. Addition of SPI (5%, 10%, 15% w/w) to PCL composite prepared at 70 o c. Papers were coated at the control thickness by varying SPI quantity. Polymer coating increased the grammage of paper, depending on the coating formula. Air permeability of PCL/SPI coated paper greatly decreased while surface roughness increased. The result revealed that PCL/SPI coated paper had significant changes in mechanical properties, to compare with uncoated paper. Although the tensile strength of the PCL/SPI coated papers decreased, compression strength, ring crush strength and bending resistance were improved. Water resist ace properties, such as water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and Cobb value were affected by polymer coating, too. However, the scale of changing depended on the coating-formula and SPI content. PCL- based coating reduced WVTR. A further reduction was obtained when SPI was integrated in the PCL/SPI coating agent as a proper amount. |
