Abstract | The main purpose of this study is to find out potential of using peroxymonosulfuric acid (MPS) to remove hexenuronic acid (HexA) and investigate the influence of HexA removal on pulp and paper properties. Hex A is formed during cooking and is held responsible for ClO2 consumption during ECF bleaching so this study also clarify the amount of ClO2 savings in bleaching process. Hardwood oxygen bleached kraft pulp (LOKP) was used in thin study and it was treated by MPS with various dosages (0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6% on pulp weight) before D0-Ep-D1bleaching stages. After bleaching, HexA content was determined and properties of pulp such as brightness, viscosity, kappa number, yield and brightness reversion were checked to clarify effects of HexA removal. Then bleached pulp was used to make hand-sheets and paper properties were measured to research the impacts of HexA removal on mechanical properties of paper. As a result of MPS treatment, ClO2 savings in bleaching process in the range 7.7 - 22% were determined and all MPS treated pulps have higher brightness and brightness stability than untreated pulp with MPS. However, viscosity, yield and mechanical properties are decreased. Experimental results show that MPS effectively removed HexA and MPS treatment is an interesting option for industrial application, both from an economic and environmental standpoint. |
