AbstractBiorefinery of plantation hardwood has recently got considerable attention while kraft pulping process is the most popular method in pulp and paper field . Kraft cooking shows a desirable pulp yield and better pulp properties compared with other methods . The process of pre - hydrolysis continued by kraft cooking as a biorefinery system can produce many kinds of variable organic material and chemicals including cellulose and bio - ethanol in the industrial scale. The hydrolysate from pre - hydrolysis process can be used as materials of bio - ethanol production. Hardwood dissolving pulp can be produced by kraft cooking with pre - hydrolysis of materials. Kraft cooking is an important industrial method in pulp and paper industry. In this research, in order to get a higher pulp yield under better cooking conditions, polysulfide (PS) and anthraquinone (AQ) were added to the kraft cooking process, and then the effect of combination of pre - hydrolysis (PH) process with PS - AQ cooking on fiber properties of acacia pulp was clarified as well. PH process of acacia wood chips was conducted at the temperature range of 145 - 149°C for 90 minutes . Liquor to wood ratio (L/W) of 4 ml/g was applied for this process . After the PH process, a cacia wood chips were cooked by kraft and PS - AQ - kraft methods under various conditions. Subsequently, estimation of pulp yields and analysis of hexenuronic acid (Hex A) contents of pulp were conducted for each cooking. At the same time, the kapp a number and viscosity of pulp were determined according to the TAPPI methods. Other pulp properties (carbohydrate composition, brightness) were estimated in this research as well. Lorentzen - Wettre fiber tester was used to test fiber properties. . Kraft cooking maintains an effective sulfidity which is also important for the fiber properties. Addition of polysulfide (PS) and anthraquinone (AQ) to the kraft process is well known as an effective me thod to increase the pulp yield. Therefore , this research fo cuses on minimizing the degradation of carbohydrates during pre - hydrolysis (PH) kraft cooking and improving the pulp yield under a suitable condi tions of sulfidity (20 - 40%) , and also getting the better fiber properties by modifying cooking conditions with addition of PS and AQ into kraft cooking process is considered as well
