AbstractBleached Acacia pulp is considered the fastest growing global source of virgin papermaking fibers in pulp and paper industries. H igh brightness and brightness stability with minimal consumption of bleaching chemicals are mostly desired . Wood chips of Acacia crassicarpa were studied for t he formation and degradation of HexA content during the conventional and modified kraft pulping a t laboratory scale. T he chips were subjected to pre - hydrolysis (PH) and subsequently cooked by adding polysulfide and anthraqu inone additive. H igher yield and lower kappa number (KN) were found in Kraft pulp than pre - hydrolyzed polysulfi de anthraquinone (P H - PS - AQ) . Then , o xygen ( O) - H 2 SO 5 (PSA) - o zone (O 3 ) - a lkaline extr action (E) - a lkaline hydrogen peroxide (P) bleaching sequence was carried out while MPS showed significant effect on reduc ing HexA content. In addition, b rightness improvement and lower KN were a lso recorded while viscosity loss was bit h igh er . Ozone bleaching showed significant effects on the brightness deve lopment and KN reduction which one wa s also responsible to reduce HexA by 36 and 41% of both pulps , respectively. Experiment demonstrates tha t maximum brightness of 84 (kraft) and 82 (PH - PS - AQ) (% ISO) were achieved at peroxide . The optimu m tensile index was estimated at 19.3 and 22.7 (Nm/g) whereas tear index was r ecorded to be 4.3 and 3.3 (mN - m 2 /g) to kr aft and PH - PS - AQ, respectively. It coul d be concluded that PSA effectively removed HexA content and could use for industrial purposes with regard to economic and environmental considerations.
