Abstract | Oxygen-alkali delignification has been well-known in pulping and bleaching technologymany years ago, but its application in bio-refinery has not been studied much. The oxidation products from lignin, especially aromatic monomers such as vanillin, syringaldehyde, vanillic acid, syringic acid are becoming more attractive because these aromatic monomers can be the starting materials to produce engineering polymers. Therefore, this research attempted to apply oxygen-alkali to lignin oxidation in order to produce aromatic monomers directly from wood. In bio-refinery, both carbohydrate and lignin have great production values so both of those have to be utilized as much as possible. However, in pulping and bleaching technology, when delignification rate is high, there occurs a loss of carbohydrate yield. Consequently, the research attempted to obtain good yields of aromatic monomer, high pulp yield and reasonable delignification rate simultaneously. In addition, lignin structure should be kept suitable for the further production of aromatic monomers. The results suggested a new direction of “oxygen-alkali delignification with limited oxygen supply”. Oxygen pressure should be low enough to prevent aromatic ring cleavage, butstrong enough to cause α-β double bond cleavage andpositively affect simple alkali delignification |
